Kayak Connection is the premier sea kayaking and stand-up paddling destination for rentals, instruction, and tours in the Monterey Bay Area. They're known all over California for their diverse adventures coupled with fantastic customer service.
A long-time client, we collaborated with them on a rebrand, reimagining their logo, and fully redesigning their website. We converted it into a mobile-optimized responsive layout, added a WordPress blog for better article management and an upgraded version of their super custom ecommerce CMS.
Within inconsistent branding and no clear visual identity, it was a perfect time to create an iconic mark to support their fun attitude and make their activities even more memorable. Santa Cruz has an amazing history of watersport-related brands, so our goal was to ensure theirs fit nicely alongside them while standing on its own.
With the desire to have something both clean and classic, we explored several different directions throughout the process. After experimenting with imagery more literal to kayaking, we landed on a universal mark that's a reminder of what naturally surrounds everything they do, the Pacific Ocean. The end result is the perfect sweet spot for all of their merchandise, with a playful and iconic feel that people of all types and ages can be excited to represent.
When we redesigned their site the first time around, we took it from a static html site with confusing navigation to a database-powered CMS that is way easier to use. This time, we spared no expense in making sure we elevated everything about the design and functionality including engaging images, restructured navigation, and an optimized mobile experience.
Not only is the entire site powered by our coveted Sleepless CMS, it also features fully custom ecommerce capabilities built right in. Everything from the content on the home page, to the intricacies of their customer orders is easily managed from one backend interface that was catered specifically to their needs. They have unique requirements in the sense that they sell scheduled tours and classes that need special considerations for registration. Programming everything custom meant making sure every base was covered in the user experience.
